Roy Schäfer is actually a trained silversmith with an apprenticeship as a carpenter. He later completed a degree in design. The design for the vario bed lay dormant in his drawer for a long time; he slept on a prototype himself for many years. For Roy Schäfer, it was unthinkable to produce or sell his furniture designs himself until he met the furniture manufacturer Tojo.
Tojo added the design to its range after Schäfer had reworked it slightly to tailor it to a younger audience.
